Beyond the Horizon: Modern Communication on Earth and in the Sky, Brno

The signal drops for a few seconds. Annoying.
At ten kilometers above ground, it is not a minor issue. It is critical infrastructure.

In this ITalk, we will break down how connectivity works where it truly matters. From 5G networks on the ground to satellite communication in aviation. Two very different technologies, one shared challenge: keeping the world online, regardless of location.

Agenda

21. 4. 2026

17:00 – 17:30

Registration & Refreshment

Refreshments that make sense: beer, soft drinks, and pizza.
Enough for a relaxed evening and a few good conversations.

17:30-18:15

Satellite Communications in Aviation (SATCOM)

Pavel Zlámal

Satellite communications (SATCOM) is a critical enabler of modern aviation, that has become a core communication technology providing global connectivity to aircrafts.

We'll explain why SATCOM matters in aviation and how it is integrated with aircraft communication domains.

We'll also look at key considerations in the SATCOM software development based on aerospace standards, along with the growing importance of cybersecurity in protecting airborne segment.

Finally, we'll explore the future of aviation connectivity, including emerging satellite constellations and 5G Non‑Terrestrial Networks.

18:15 - 18:30

Energy Saving & Traffic Steering in 5G Radio Access Network

Martin Tuleja

How do O-RAN concepts tackle today’s RAN challenges from energy efficiency to intelligent traffic steering?

Drawing on our own O-RAN deployment and 5G simulations, we’ll look at what works in practice, what doesn’t, and how telcos can evolve to stay relevant in an AI-driven world.

Pavel Zlámal

Pavel Zlámal Software Architect, Honeywell

Pavel is a Software Architect at Honeywell with more than 10 years of experience designing and developing advanced communication systems for aviation. His expertise is focused on the software architecture and design of satellite communication solutions that provide reliable, secure connectivity to aircrafts.
Martin Tuleja

Martin Tuleja System Architect at Tieto

Martin Tuleja is a System Architect at Tieto specializing in telco-grade cloud infrastructure and 5G architectures. Over the past 10 years, he has contributed to large-scale telecom deployments, working across both data-plane acceleration and control-plane signaling systems. Martin has practical experience integrating DPDK-based data-plane solutions and implementing O-RAN components in Kubernetes-based environments. His focus lies at the intersection of high-performance networking, cloud-native design, and open architectures.
